As a teacher we need to teach 21st century skills as part of our curriculum. While all the skills are necessary to teach, the “Four C’s “are considered to be the most important. The four C’s of 21st Century skills are: 1. Critical thinking, 2. Creativity, 3. Collaboration, 4. Communication. These four skills are necessary for modern students to succeed in school and the workplace. So if we "think outside the box" in regards to critical thinking, we can roll up our sleeves and get some great ideas by being creative, and communication is going to help us express and understand this. Communication is the ability to convey ideas and share feelings with others .It is an important life skill and something that should not be overlooked. It is a key in the classroom; hence, a teacher should be proficient in all four modes of communication: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A teacher should know how to utilize this proficiency effectively in a school environment. Teachers benefit from good communication skills in three different domains:- 1. Communicating with Students, 2. Communication skills are vital for interactions with students. In the teacher’s role, he or she is responsible for comprehending the complex information and conveying it clearly to the students, presenting it in a manner that sustains their attention. 3. Teachers are also required to adapt content for different learning styles, motivate students to learn, build supportive relationships using encouragement and empathy, manage the classroom, create a safe and supportive learning environment, and describe the course in an engaging way. 2. Communicating with Parents: A teacher also needs to communicate effectively with parents. This could take place through a variety of mediums like phone calls, emails, and in-person meetings, so the teacher must be skilled with both verbal and written language. This is particularly important because the teacher will often have to discuss sensitive subjects – such as behavioural issues, learning problems, and the student’s strengths and weaknesses, without making the parent feel confused or defensive. It is important that a teacher be clear but tactful at all times. 3. Communicating with Colleagues: Teaching does not involve independent work; it also needs collaboration. Whether planning lessons together, updating colleagues on certain students’ progress, or sharing tips about how to handle different issues in the classroom, good communication skills will be of use. Strategies for Effective Communication in the Classroom: Create a safe learning environment with supportive relationships: A supportive learning environment is built using communication. More teamwork: Teamwork and group discussions contribute to creating a more comfortable environment in the classroom. By working in small groups, students are able to share their ideas and improve their communication skills. Communication is not only verbal but also non-verbal. Teachers should ensure that the signals they are giving out through body language are positive, confident, and engaging. Making eye contact is also important while presenting to the whole class; it motivates everyone to pay attention, which helps them learn, as well as making them feel involved and engaged. Listen to Others: The ‘listening’ component of communication should not be overlooked. Over 60% of all misunderstandings result from poor listening. Active listening involves listening carefully to what the students say and checking that you have understood them correctly. Feedback: Feedback is also an important component of communication. It has been shown that positive feedback builds students’ confidence, helps create a supportive environment, and increases academic success. Negative feedback, which is used more often in the classroom, can cause lower levels of academic success. Technical skills: The use of teaching aids such as computers, videos, and online resources is another way to keep students engaged and reinforce their understanding. It can also increase the effectiveness of communication with students with different learning styles. Be clear: Good communication and good teaching are about understanding and being understood. For this reason, you should always be clear and unambiguous.
